Flea Collars

Flea collars are an excellent preventive measure, when used before the flea season, or after a successful flea-elimination program. However, they cannot be used to fight an active infestation problem.

Flea Combs

Using a narrow-toothed flea comb will remove fleas from a dog’s coat. Comb from the skin out over a small section of the coat at a time. To keep fleas form jumping off the comb, dip it in petroleum jelly before using. Flick fleas off the comb into a bowl of warm sudsy water. A flea comb can provide immediate relief from an infestation problem. Combing a dog with a flea comb is also an effective way to determine if fleas are present. However a flea comb should be used as only part of a flea control program, since it will not eliminate an infestation problem by itself.

Flea Shampoos

A wide variety of effective flea shampoos are available to consumers. Shampooing is a convenient form of flea control, since it can be done as a normal part of the dog’s bating routine. A flea dip, which is absorbed by the dog’s skin, offers longer lasting protection against infestation, and is used for more serious problems. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions carefully when applying these products. Most flea shampoos must be left on the dog’s coat for 10 minutes to allow the insecticide ingredient enough time to kill all fleas.

It’s important to maintain a range of 68 degrees F to 80 degrees F., use a heat source when needed.

Humidity

This is the most effective way of preventing a flea infestation and can be helpful once an infestation is identified. These are most commonly seen in the form of topical liquids that are applied between the shoulder blades. They are most effective when applied year round and often prevent large infestations once the peak months arrive. Be sure to read the package directions carefully and NEVER apply a dog flea product to a cat. Also, do not attempt to divide products meant for larger dogs to apply on small dogs. Consult a veterinarian immediately if you discover that the incorrect product has been applied.

Flea Sprays and Foggers

Sprays and foggers are designed to kill fleas, flea eggs and larvae inside the home or other enclosed area, without posing a health risk to people, pets or indoor plants. Sprays and foggers should include a quick-kill ingredient to eliminate adult fleas, and an insect growth regulator to kill eggs and larvae before they develop. Be sure to remind customers to read all labels carefully before applying a premise spray or fogger.

Air-conditioning and air-exchange systems in the house should be shut off completely when premise sprays and foggers are applied. This will ensure that the full strength of these products remains in the house. It will also prevent these insecticides from being re-circulated in the house through the air systems later on.

Yard sprays are also an essential part of a flea control program; these sprays eliminate fleas, flea eggs and larvae from a dog’s outdoor environment. Yard sprays are most effective when they are microencapsulated to provide a gradual time-release of their active ingredients. Before using a yard spray, locate flea “hot spots” in the yard, and remove debris such as twigs and leaves from the area. Also remove all debris from porches and garages, since this can afford protection to fleas. Do not use a yard spray in the home!
